A Robin Hood fan is to travel from her home in the US to Sherwood Forest to renew her wedding vows after overcoming cancer.

Debbie Tencza, 56, will dress in a purple dress bought especially for the ceremony while her husband Joe, 50, will wear a Robin of Sherwood outfit.

It comes after Mrs Tencza, who studied medieval history at university, underwent several operations last year after being diagnosed with breast cancer.

When she was given the all clear, Mrs Tencza and her husband decided to renew their vows to mark their 15th wedding anniversary and travel from their home in New Jersey to do it.

Mrs Tencza, a project manager, said: “I have loved the legend of Robin Hood since I was a young girl.

“Joe knew of the legend as well before we met but learned more as we spent time together and are both big fans now.

“I have many books on Robin Hood and love to read about both the legend and the history whenever I get a chance.”

The service will take place in Sherwood Forest in Nottinghamshire on August 4, 15 years to the day after they tied the knot.

The pair, who married in 1998 in New Mexico after meeting at the firm where they worked, have attended Robin Hood events across the US and even named their dog Robin of Loxley.

Mrs Tencza's parents will also travel from Florida to attend the event with other friends and family members.

She added: “Last year I was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent several surgeries but my wonderful husband Joe was by my side every moment and I am now cancer free in 2013.

“So this year seems like the perfect time for new beginnings and for our vow renewal as well. Sherwood Forest is the perfect place for a fresh start of the rest of our lives.”

John Knight, culture committee chairman with Nottinghamshire County Council, said: “We are delighted that Debbie and Joe have chosen Sherwood Forest to celebrate such a special occasion.

“We have a lot of interest every year in the Robin Hood Festival from visitors across the globe because the legend of Robin Hood has such a huge international profile.”

The Robin Hood Festival runs from August 5 to 11.
