Maybe it is all this talk about being environmentally conscious but green certainly was dominant on the opening day of the Road Running League a few days ago.

Of the six athletes who filled the top three positions in the men and women's categories, only one wasn't wearing the green kit of St Patrick's AC with Pembroke Athleta's Brian Magri breaking their dominance.

Next Friday, St Patrick's AC will be rewarded for winning last season's Road Running League and given how they've started this one, it looks like they intend to do all they can to repeat that double success.

They have the ability to do so, given that they can bank on two athletes with the potential of Haitem Ksheim and Jonathan Balzan.

Year after year, race after race Ksheim has been consistently improving and his win in Żebbuġ, once again the setting for the first race of the league, in an impressive 32:01, continued in that trend.

Only Balzan managed to keep close to him with a 32:29 finish.

"I'm very pleased," was Balzan's immediate reaction.

"Results are improving after the injury. I couldn't have done better as it was a personal best in the 10k and last year it was 33.17 for me."

That this wasn't good enough to win is, perhaps, a sign that the level of road running is going up.

"I couldn't match Haithem. He was in a class of his own and it bodes well for the team," Balzan added.

Indeed, even though it is still early days, St Patrick's AC already enjoy a lead of over two minutes.

It was equally tight in the women's race where Giselle Camilleri fended off the challenge of team-mate Carmen Hili.

"I didn't give my all as the plan was that I would treat it as a test," Camilleri said. "I haven't raced since the last 5km of Birkirkara after which I developed a sharp pain in my left knee which kept me out of training."

Third place went to Marisa Muscat and the third St Patrick's AC athlete is making a bit of a habit of finishing on the podium.

"I owe it all to my coach Roger Zammit," she said when talking of her satisfaction with the result.

"For the last four months I have been training regularly with him twice a week. It has not been easy especially during summer."

These results mean that St Patrick's AC women's team have a lead of over 12 minutes over second-placed Żurrieq Wolves.
