Nearly every day we read about road traffic accidents and often it does seem to point at one of the drivers involved showing total disregard for road signs. It is becoming extremely common for some drivers to ignore the solid white lines, which they think are there just to break the monotony of the grey tarmac.

Time and again, once on a single-carriage road with solid white lines, someone decides to overtake, causing danger to all those who happen to be on that stretch of road at the time.

I just cannot understand the mentality of those drivers who flout the law continuously and are becoming a menace to all of us who abide by the law. The time has come to start imposing very heavy penalties, which must include the withdrawal of the driving licence as well, forcing any offending driver to retake his or her driving test before the licence is returned.

I spent years in the UK dealing with this type of carnage on the roads. I do wish that somehow those who have been found guilty of careless or reckless driving would be forced to see first-hand their handy work. The loss of life, the horrific injuries and the wrecking of whole families just cannot be ignored any longer; it is obvious that offending drivers unsuccessfully have gone past the education stage, so now it is time for some serious enforcement by the police and hefty penalties by the courts.
