Nacho Novo believes Rangers fans are not being treated with the honesty they deserve amid the club's financial problems.

The striker looks set to leave Ibrox after being dissatisfied with the contract offer on the table as the club awaits news of a proposed takeover from London-based Andrew Ellis.

The future of manager Walter Smith, who has not been able to buy a player for almost two years, is also uncertain after a season in which Lloyds Banking Group have sought to recoup some of the debt of around £31 million the club is in.

Novo said: "You can't blame anybody here, you can't blame (chief executive) Martin Bain, you can't blame the manager.

"The bank are the ones that are running the club right now. That's a big problem and for me, we need to start thinking more about the fans.

"Some people don't go on holiday just to get a season ticket. They pay all that money to come and watch good football.

"It's time to start opening the eyes of the fans and being honest with them."

Novo is pondering offers from Spain, Greece and England with Middlesbrough thought to be his most likely destination should he leave Ibrox.

The former Dundee player conceded he needs to start more games after the majority of his appearances this season came from the bench.

But the Spaniard is finding it difficult to end his six-year stint at the club despite saying an emotional goodbye to his team-mates following the 3-3 draw against Motherwell on Sunday.

"They don't believe me," the 31-year-old said. "I don't believe myself either.

"It's a hard one because I have been here so many years.

"But I need to make sure everything is right. I said goodbye just in case I'm leaving."
