I would like to clarify a number of incorrect statements included in Joseph Vella's letter to the editor, Unfinished Gozo Project (April 7).

First of all the project had to be finalised by end 2008 and not by end 2007. The delays were due to a number of unforeseen circumstances, both technical and financial. These have however all been ironed out and minor works have resumed accordingly. The local council has taken a decision to leave the major works related to the paving of the square for the week after Easter for very obvious reasons.

May I also point out that during the period of inactivity the square was left absolutely clear of any heavy machinery or any other material associated with construction sites. In fact the present condition of the square, after the first phase of the project was completed, is already much better than what we had experienced for decades.

The estimated investment for this project is of €400,000, a project intended to completely rehabilitate this important area situated in the heart of the historic quarters of the locality.

How many projects for Victoria with a similarly significant budget has Mr Vella heard of or experienced during these past 15 years of local council governance? Absolutely none, I dare answer on his behalf. So allow me and my council to publicise an achievement which, when taken within the context, of the reality of a local council and even more so within the context of the reality of our council, is something out of the ordinary.

A final word of gratitude goes to Mepa for co-financing the project through the EIPP fund and to the Prime Minister and in particular to the Parliamentary Secretary for Public Dialogue and Information for their interest and constant support.
