Leo Brincat's letter entitled Feeble WasteServ Reply On Incinerator warrants a reply in order to clarify matters on the issue.

As stated in the press reply issued by WasteServ on April 3, this comprehensive maintenance programme was indeed scheduled and the authorities were alerted and updated of the process continuously.

Press releases tend to be shortened or reworded when covered on the news, but nevertheless the complete statement could have been read in its entirety by visiting the company website.

With regard to the volumes of waste being stored, the statement said that these amounts are the same that were being processed when the incinerator was operating normally, and thus could be easily calculated. Apart from the facility storage areas, such extra volumes are currently being stored in refrigerated containers hired for the purpose.

This storage is needed because this incinerator at Marsa is the only such facility on the islands.

In conclusion, the complete statement also said that emergency measures are not needed, because the maintenance process is at a very advanced staged and the incinerator shall be switched on again in the following days.
