Prof David Attard, the long serving director of the International Maritime Law Institute, has been sworn in as a judge on the Law of the Sea Tribunal.

Also sworn in were Elsa Kelly (Argentina) and Markiyan Z. Kulyk (Ukraine). The three judges were elected at the twenty-first Meeting of States Parties to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea to serve a term of nine years.

Before taking up their duties, newly elected judges are required to make a solemn declaration that they will exercise their powers as judges impartially and conscientiously.
