The Times of Malta says Enemalta officials who leave the corporation are to be bound by confidentiality in the wake of revelations at meetings of the Public Accounts Committee. 

The Malta Independent quotes Joseph Muscat saying the Opposition is sleeping on the country's problems.

In-Nazzjon says Simon Busuttil yesterday called for moral fibre within the government in view of the questions raised in the ministerial declaration of assets.

l-orizzont says PN officials abusively had information about proceedings against an army officer which even he did not have access to. 

The overseas press

Deutsche Welle reports the German Federal Returning Officer has confirmed early on Monday that Chancellor Angela Merkel has secured a third term in office with her Christian Democrats and their Bavarian sister party, the Christian Social Union, a combined 41.5 per cent. That's just short of a majority. However, Chancellor Merkel's preferred coalition partners, the liberal Free Democrats (FDP), were voted out of the Bundestag having taken just 4.8 per cent of the vote. It is likely that the CDU would have to consider a grand coalition with the rival Social Democrats, led by Merkel's challenger for the Chancellery, Peer Steinbrück, which finished with 25.7 per cent.

The East African Standard reports Kenyan security forces have said they are in control of a large part of the Westgate shopping mall in Nairobi where between 10 and 15 Islamist militants are still holding a number of hostages. The military has rescued most of the hostages held by al-Shabaab militants and only about 10 remained under the terrorists’ control. The BBC reports some of those rescued were dehydrated. At least 68 people are known to have been killed in the attack.

Dawn claims the death toll in a double suicide attack on the All Saints Church in Peshawar has reached 78, including 34 women and seven children. Jundullah extremists, the Taliban's faction in Pakistan, claimed responsibility for the attackin retaliation US drone strikes in Pakistan's tribal northwest. Relatives of the victims gathered at the scene to protest against the government's failure to protect them.

Al Ayyam says 16 people have been killed and 35 others injured when a suicide bomber blew himself up inside a tent of mourners attending a funeral in Baghdad's southern neighbourhood of Dora. Yesterday's bloodshed came a day after a wave of attacks killed 104 people, most at a double suicide attack on a Shiite funeral in Baghdad.

The Washington Post reports President Obama has a made another appeal for a wholesale reform of US gun laws, at a memorial service honouring the victims of last Monday’s shooting at the Washington Navy yard.  

Ultimas Noticias says Venezuela has arrested three National Guard officials for their alleged involvement in smuggling 1.3 tonnes of cocaine on an Air France flight from Caracas to Paris.  

Russia Today reports the Russian Foreign Ministry has confirmed that a mortar round hit its embassy compound in Damascus, injuring three people. The incident cams as the Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov again condemned the United States, Britain and France for “being blinded by their objective of regime change in Syria”  

Xinhua reports large areas of southern China are being lashed by one of the most powerful storms in the past 30 years. Winds of more than 180 kmph have been recorded as typhoon Usagi ripped inland, felling trees and power lines, toppling trains and blowing cars off the road. Reports say at least 25 people have been confirmed dead but the toll is expected to increase dramatically. The post of Hong Kong has been shut down.

The Guardian announces “Breaking Bad” has won the award for outstanding drama series while “Modern Family” was named best comedy series for the fourth consecutive year in the 65th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards in Los Angeles. Jeff Daniels won the Emmy for best drama series actor for his role “The Newsroom,” with Claire Danes capturing top dramatic actress honors for “Homeland.” Julia Louis-Dreyfus claimed her second consecutive best comedy actress Emmy for her role on “Veep,” while Jim Parsons won the top comedy actor trophy for “The Big Bang Theory.” HBO's Liberace biopic “Behind the Candelabra” won for best miniseries or movie, along with honours for director Stephen Soderbergh and actor Michael Douglas.
