The following are the top stories in the Maltese and overseas press:

The Times says the EU is worried by Malta's call for limited territory visas while the Schengen area remains locked in a visas dispute with Libya. It also features the rescue of a man from a burning bedroom yesterday and the call by Mgr Victor Grech for a realistic poverty line and new minimum wage.

The Malta Independent says proposed new Frontex rules of engagement have been blocked by the Civil Liberties Committee of the European Parliament.

In-Nazzjon leads with remarks in Parliament by the Prime Minister on the Mepa reform, which, he said, was aimed at achieving sustainable development.

l-orizzont also gives prominence to Mgr Victor Grech's remarks on poverty and the rescue of the elderly man after a fire in his bedroom.

The overseas press

The poverseas Deutsche Welle reports German Chancellor Angela Merkel has said she wants the eurozone to be able to exclude one of its members in future if it is necessary to avert a crisis. But exclusion from the 16-nation eurozone would be a "last resort".

Kathemerini later quoted Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou saying there was "zero possibility" of his country leaving the eurozone. He rejected the idea that Greece would be forced out of the single currency.

Al Jazeera reports EU foreign affairs chief Catherine Ashton has called on the leaders in the Israeli-Palestinian dispute to resume talks quickly, "in the long-term interests of both sides".

President Obama has denied there was any crisis in US-Israeli relations over the Israeli settlements. He told Fox News the two countries had a special bond that was not going to go away but admitted the Israeli approval of plans for 1,600 new homes in East Jerusalem had not been helpful to the peace process.

The Jerusalem Post says the president's comments came after Mr Netanyahu's brother in-law had described the US President as anti-Semitic.

ABC reports Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero has blamed members of the Basque separatist group ETA for the shooting a French police officer near Paris on Tuesday evening.

L'Osservatore Romano quotes the Pope saying he hoped his forthcoming letter to Irish Catholics on the sex abuse scandal in the Church helps with the process of "repentance, healing and renewal". He told his weekly general audience that he would sign the pastoral letter on Friday and send it to the faithful soon thereafter.

Meanwhile, The Irish Independent says the head of the Catholic Church in Ireland, Cardinal Sean Brady, remained under intense pressure to resign despite apologising for not alerting the police about a pedophile priest.

The Daily Champion reports Nigeria's acting president has dissolved the country's Cabinet. The National Assembly voted Goodluck Jonathan into power last month after President Umaru Yar'Adua, long troubled by health ailments, had not been seen publicly since November.

El Pais says five persons have been arrested in France and Spain after the father of kidnapped Indian boy Sahil Saeed paid a £110,000 ransom for the safe return of his son. According to a statement by Spanish police, officers saw him hand over the money in Paris and later swooped on the suspects.

Florida Post says a judge has ordered a "miracle" baby rescued from the rubble after the devastating earthquake in Haiti be reunited with her parents after DNA tests proved she was the daughter of a couple who has been living in an open-air makeshift camp in Port au Prince since the quake.

Gulf News reports steamy text messages have resulted in a three-month jail sentence for a Indian man and an Indian woman working as cabin crew for Emirates airline in Dubai. Judges ruled the unnamed pair, aged 47 and 42, had planned to "commit sin".
