Opposition leader Simon Busuttil this evening hit out at Prime Minister Joseph Muscat over the appointment of the next President saying that he was presented with a fait accompli and was not consulted on the matter.

Dr Busuttil spoke with timesofmalta.com after a 10-minute meeting with Dr Muscat at Castille.

He said Dr Muscat sent for him to inform him that what had been revealed in the media about the Presidency was correct.

The Sunday Times of Malta first gave the news that Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca was frontrunner for President on February 23. She has since accepted the nomination even though she was initially reluctant to accept the post.

Asked whether the Opposition would support the nominee, Dr Busuttil said this would be determined during a PN parliamentary group meeting.

The Prime Minister is expected to announce Dr Coleiro Preca's nomination imminently.
