Welshman Daniel Holmes, who is in jail for cultivating cannabis, has requested bail until a decision about whether his human rights have been breached is taken.

Mr Holmes, 35, who was jailed for 10-and-a-half years, is claiming his human rights had been breached during the investigation and subsequent proceedings in at least four instances.

He made his claim in the Constitutional Court after his jail term was confirmed on appeal.

Mr Holmes was caught growing cannabis at an apartment in Gozo in June 2006. He always insisted the cannabis was for his personal use.

The request for bail was submitted today by lawyers Franco Debono and Michaela Spiteri.

Mr Justice Anthony Ellul, deferred the case to April 16, when most of the witnesses are expected to be heard in one sitting.
