The Badminton Association recently launched its activities for the new season with a team tournament at St Martin's College.

The 28 participants were graded into four teams, according to their standard of play. Besides association members, the event was open also to non-members who wanted to participate purely for fun; there were no age limitations.

The four captains on the day were: Konrad Degabriele, Patrick Cassar, Stefan Salomone and Aldo Polidano. In the first round, the teams of Degabriele and Cassar were drawn to play each other while Salomone's squad faced the one of Polidano.

Winners then played each other for first place while the losing sides figured in a play-off for third place. Each fixture consisted of five games: one men's and ladies' singles and three doubles.

Degabriele's team beat Cassar's squad 3-2 and Polidano's side overcame Salomone's group with an identical scoreline.

Polidano's team then placed first after a 3-2 win over Degabriele's squad. Cassar's side took third place. The winning team also included Maria Borg, Edmund De Giovanni, Andre Grech, Mathilde Friggieri, Stephanie Mejlaq and Justin Catania.

Another similar pre-season tournament is scheduled for September 28 at the same venue.

The activities of the Badminton Association continue on Sunday with a seminar where the future of the game in Malta will be discussed. This will be held at St Martin's College at 9.30 a.m.
