Power stations' emissions can now be verified on the internet on a purposely set up page which would be updated hourly, Finance Minister Tonio Fenech said this evening.

He said that one would also be able to compare the local emissions to the EU benchmarks.

The minister said that actual emissions showed that the CO was negligible while the SO2 and dust were below the EU levels. Nitrous oxides were slightly above the EU levels and Enemalta was currently processing a tender for the installation of advanced machinery which would modify the boilers for the EU level to be met.

The minister spoke about the power station extension describing this as an important decision for the country's social and economic future.

The government, he said, had opted for the best technology in the country's circumstances and had it not gone for this option, the cost of water and electricity would have increased by 30 per cent.

He emphasised that no toxic waste would be produced.
