Portugal took a break from their media commitments today after securing their berth in the quarter-finals as group winners.

"The Portuguese team have cancelled all their media activities of today," a brief message from the organisers said.

It did not say whether Portugal would also not train at their base where photographers usually get a quarter of an hour with them before the team work behind closed doors.

The exceptions were two sessions open to the public which were attended by a massive following of some 12,000 fans.

Portugal have a full week to prepare for their quarter-final since their last group rivals Switzerland, whom they meet on Sunday, are eliminated.

Portugal beat Czech Republic three to one in their second match yesterday to secure top spot in the group following an opening two to nothing win over Turkey.

The Turks and Czechs, who both beat Switzerland, play for second place on Sunday.

The Portuguese decision comes after a day of high emotion yesterday when qualification was followed by an announcement by Champions League runners-up Chelsea that they had secured the services of Portugal's Brazilian coach Luiz Felipe Scolari.

Today's cancellation might have something to do with this news but is more likely to be a reward to the players for their early qualification.

Portugal have already had to negotiate the issue of winger Cristiano Ronaldo's club future at the tournament, dampening fears that it might disrupt the concentration of a squad who learnt only late last night of Scolari's impending move.
