I wish to congratulate Harry Vassallo for his article A Particular Belief (September 12). It was a clear, honest and direct piece of writing and one of the best articles I've read this year.

I sincerely wish that more politicians from both major parties will stand up and be counted because this country deserves better than being treated like it's some sort of colony of the Vatican.

What astounds me the most about the leaders of the Catholic Church in general, and the Maltese Bishops in particular, is that they actually seem to believe that they have a monopoly on knowing what is right and what is wrong. It seems to me that they don't know that on a global scale Catholics are in the minority.

It seems to me that they don't realise that if the doctrine of the Catholic Church is indeed "the word of God", then the word of God is largely irrelevant to billions of people around the world.
