A clubber who was taken to hospital after suffering an overdose from a new form of liquid ecstasy was yesterday given a suspended jail term.

The 36-year-old man consumed the drug together with a friend who also overdosed on Sunday at a night club in San Ġwann. The two men were found unconscious inside the club during a party and were rushed to hospital in critical condition, police sources said.

The drug, gamma hydroxybutyric acid, which has also been reportedly used as a rape drug in the UK, is an odourless and colourless liquid that can be mixed with any liquid.

The man told the police he bought the drug from Germany where he lives and shared it with his friend, who is expected to be arraigned in the coming days once he recovers.

He pleaded guilty to importing the drug for his own use, sharing it with a friend and possessing the drug. Magistrate Miriam Hayman took into consideration the early guilty plea and handed down a one-year jail term suspended for two years.

Police Inspectors Kevin Farrugia and Pierre Grech prosecuted.
