The Police Board had a four-hour closed door meeting today as it heard evidence on the circumstances which led the police to mistakenly arraign a man last week.
The man, Darryl Luke Borg, was accused of a hold-up and held in remand for three days before another man was accused and owned up. No one else was involved.
The case was dropped in court by the police yesterday and Mr Borg this morning filed an application demanding compensation.
The Police Board, presided by Judge Franco Depasquale, heard evidence by Mr Borg and Inspectors Carlos Cordina and Joseph Mercieca, who had arraigned him.
Mr Borg told The Times of Malta yesterday that he had been driven to the brink of despair.
He had never set foot in prison before and could not grasp what was happening to him.
He said he was interrogated by four police officers who bombarded him with questions, told him they were there to help him and advised him that he had better admit to the charges to secure a reduced punishment.
CID officers told him they had crystal clear photographic evidence showing it was him who committed the crime, he said.
