Donations in excess of 5,000 euros should be declared by political parties and those over 40,000 should be made illegal, Alternattiva Demokratika said.

In its reaction to Nationalist MP Franco Debono's presentation of a private member's bill on party financing, AD general secretary Ralph Cassar said
one should also keep in mind that commercial companies, both private as well as those owned by the political parties, donate money to the parties without any control of any sort.

Chairman Michael Briguglio said AD had been speaking on the need of party financing reform since 1989, and it submitted its latest proposals to previous speaker Louis Galea in 2008.

"These were ignored by the PNPL duopoly, which are both benefitting from political money laundering," he said.
