The meeting of the PN parliamentary group which was held this afternoon considered various scenarios in the ongoing stalemate with rebel MP Franco Debono but the overwhelming view was that the MP should not be allowed to 'blackmail' the government, informed sources said.

The sources said that the group heard some calls for a fresh approach to be made to Dr Debono. However, most MPs argued that enough had been done already although the party's door should remain open.

The group agreed that the no confidence motion – which Dr Debono has said he will back - will be debated in parliament next week with the vote being taken on Thursday at noon. The sources said that there appeared to be no question of Dr Gonzi stepping down before or after the vote is taken although there was hardly any talk of an election during the meeting.

Dr Debono yesterday confirmed that there were contacts between the PN and himself but said that the Prime Minister or whoever was responsible for the current situation should assume responsibility and resign.
