The Nationalist Party has expressed concern that the Ombudsman felt the need to file a judicial protest against the government after he felt he was being obstructed.

Home Affairs spokesman Jason Azzopardi said this was an unprecedented step  and confirmed that the government did not want scrutiny.

The court action was taken yesterday, with the Ombudsman saying that he failed to understand why the Home Affairs Minister seemed to be refusing to cooperate in his search for the truth about army promotions and was creating obstacles in every way.

The PN said the situation struck at the core of democracy and did not happen in normal European democracies which the government claimed it wanted to emulate.

It recalled that the government members in the House Business Committee voted against an Opposition request for the Ombudsman to investigate the operations of the army injustices board. It now resulted that the Opposition had been right.

It urged the government to cooperate with the Ombudsman and not to create obstacles which ultimately undermined the rights of the people.
