Former Gżira mayor and Nationalist Party candidate in the forthcoming general election Albert Rizzo died early yesterday morning after an illness.

An auctioneer by profession, Mr Rizzo, 60, planned to contest the general election in the 10th district. He had contested in 2003 and served as a mayor and councillor of Gżira for several years. Born in 1948, Mr Rizzo is well-known for his series of swimming feats. In 1980, this culminated in breaking the world record in water treading.

On Republic Day 2001, Mr Rizzo was awarded the Midalja għall-Qadi tar-Repubblika by then President Guido de Marco. Nationalist Party secretary general Joe Saliba expressed the party's deepest regret at the death of Mr Rizzo who, he said, was not only active on the Gżira council but also carried out philanthropic work in various organisations. He said that despite his deteriorating health, Mr Rizzo still meant to contest the March 8 election.

Azzjoni Nazzjonali leader Josie Muscat also expressed his sorrow at Mr Rizzo's death.

Mr Rizzo, he said, is not only remembered for his world record but also for his generosity with those in need.
