Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi again referred to the e-mail exchange between the leader of the Opposition and an RTK journalist today and said it was not acceptable to defend a scandal by trying to hide it.

In the e-mails, the journalist tells Dr Muscat what is going on at her place of work and speaks on political issues.

Speaking in Paola this morning, Dr Gonzi said that the content of the e-mails was scandalous and it was not acceptable to defend a scandal by trying to hide it. This was shameful.

It was shameful for the Opposition leader to ask a journalist to spy for him at her workplace to obtain information he would be able to use. In doing so, Dr Muscat was encouraging an employee to deceive her employer.

The Prime Minister said he was confident that the people considered such matters to be scandalous.

On the economic situation, Dr Gonzi said his duty was to offer solutions for the problems the country was facing and that was what he and his party were doing

He noted that the crisis in Libya could have killed Malta's tourism industry but, in spite of everything, a good number of tourists visited and growth was registered.

On Smart City, he said this had replaced a lot of abandoned factories. He also spoke on MCAST, referring to a statement made by the Opposition leader earlier this week that a Labour government would complete the development of the extension project.

Dr Gonzi said that the Nationalist Party was in government and it and not Labour, would develop the extension.

It was doing it because Smart City and enterprises needed students from Mcast and University.

It was doing it because Malta was in the European Union and through the EU's assistance it could invest in the project. It was also doing it because the south of the island, as well as the north, deserved success.

Dr Gonzi said that what the PN was doing now was not to win the election but to give the country long term results.

At no point during yesterday's meeting did Dr Gonzi mention the transport reform.

When asked about the reform and Friday's vote of no confidence after the meeting, Dr Gonzi walked away without answering the question.
