All necessary protection should be provided to people who possessed information or were active against criminality as they are being exposed to risks on their or their families’ lives, the Civil Society Network said.

It said in a statement that such protection should also be given to politicians and members of the judiciary involved in investigations related to the allegations made by slain journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia.

Following Ms Caruana Galizia’s murder a few weeks ago, government institutions defended themselves against accusations of failing to prevent the murder by stating that Ms Caruana Galizia had not wanted police protection.

The network noted that Maltese and international press reported in the past days that both whistleblower Maria Efimova as well as  former police inspector and FIAU official Jonathan Ferris stated they felt their lives were in danger in view of the fact that they had information related to criminal activities related to Malta and because they refused to remain silent on criminal activities.

“Our country needs a stronger and unequivocal commitment towards rule of law,” it said adding its next demonstration was in Valletta next Sunday at 4pm. The main speaker at the demonstration will be former anti-corruption magistrate Antonio Di Pietro.
