When you take out a car like the Citroën C5 Tourer after seeing the impressive commercial on TV, you would expect something special. It is, admittedly, quite something.

A quick walk around it and you are suitably impressed: there are parking sensors all round, side repeaters on the stem of the side mirrors, rear lights that seem to complement the front prolonged main cluster.

Fog lamps are integrated into the lower end, beneath the bumper. The Citroën chevron badge is subtle and stylish, chrome lining strips from beneath the front lights and along the side of the car, then a wedge that travels smoothly along the side in motion with the door handles.

The car I had was a little 'Maltese' - the Persique alloy wheels are shaped like a ten-sided Maltese cross which blend well. The rear quarter window has now been extensively enlarged from its saloon sister, resulting in a panoramic side view. This Citroën has a low roof and an even sportier look.

Open the door to slide into the Tourer and take in the sheer luxury of the interiors. The dashboard features needle-less dials and horizontal temperature for oil and water.

I had to venture to a forecourt to fill up on diesel - the Tourer does not act like a diesel and does not feel like one, either. It pulls well and sounds very 'petrol'.

The Tourer comes with seven airbags, tinted glass, adjustable steering wheel, and split air-conditioning which monitors the level of air inside the cabin. If it reaches an unacceptable level, mainly in traffic or behind an old Maltese bus, the system will automatically revert to circulate the air inside the car.

It is a pleasure to drive, even at 4,780 mm in length. The car is also equipped with parking space measure, which will indicate if you drive past a space in which the car would fit adequately. The lane departure warning system will alert the driver when veering off the lane.

The luggage space is impressive and there is a full-size spare wheel conveniently tucked beneath the boot carpeting.

The Tourer is different from other Citroëns I have had the pleasure to drive. It gives off a great sense of presence and pride. And buyers should have lots of fun ticking options from the seemingly endless list of accessories. It also comes with a 12-year anti-corrosion warranty.
