Stompers TGIF 12
Overseas Hopleaf 56

Despite a 'grey-haired' predominance and even an occasional wrinkly stop for breath, the skill and experience of Overseas saw them grinding out a convincing win over the less mature Stompers to claim the Rugby Union League Championship.

Overseas sped to an 18-point lead before Camilleri got one back for Stompers, converted by Satariano, just before half-time. Indeed, Stompers had featured strongly with good running movements but lacked the final killer touch.

They started the second half looking more determined. But, as usual, the Overseas veterans were pacing themselves and when Satariano was sidelined with a leg injury, Stompers lost their pattern.

From then on Overseas applied more and more pressure as Stompers defence began to show cracks.

Rickards, van Reeven (2), Farrugia, Williams and Middleton, the world's oldest international, all scored tries and Newbould finally found his kicking boots to convert them all.

The match was not as one-sided as the score suggests. However, in the end, the organisation and experience of Overseas saw them through.

Alligators Cisk 15

Kavallieri knew they had no chance for the championship but still stormed away convincingly to victory over a much improved Alligators.

Alligators took an early lead from a Waterhouse penalty. They could have increased their advantage at least twice but good chances went begging through dreadful handling and passing in the centre.

Kavallieri's passion and teamwork soon began to take their toll though. Two tries by Grima took them ahead and from then on there was no doubt about the result.

In the second half, Alligators hit back with a good try by Sullivan, converted by Waterhouse, but back handling and wrong options were constant problems which wasted so many of the forwards' efforts.

By contrast, Kavallieri's defence was always impressive as Doublesin, Azzopardi and Vassallo added further tries, two of which converted by Doublesin.

The hard-working Busuttil got a last try for Alligators but it was far too little, far too late against a resurgent Kavallieri who reproduced their early season form and look a good bet to defend their cup in the next competition.
