Former world champion sprinter Merlene Ottey has earmarked Malta as the venue for her next training camp.

Sources have told The Times that the 42-year-old Jamaican-born athlete who now competes for Slovenia, could spend up to 14 days training here next month.

Ottey, widely regarded as one of the best ever sprinters, is still active despite her veteran age.

In September, Ottey, winner of 20 world championship medals and eight Olympic medals, placed third in the 200m race at the Golden League Grand Prix in Brussels. Her time was 23.08 seconds.

Ottey became a naturalised Slovenian in 2001 under a special law that enables persons of outstanding skills to apply.

Her switch of allegiances meant she could not take part in the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester.

She has been living and training in Ljubljana since 1998 when she linked up with Slovenian coach Srdjan Djordevic.
