(aet - Gzira win 4-2 on penalties)

Despite having to play for most of the match with ten players, Gzira United managed to hold on to a draw, even after extra-time, before going on to qualify to the semi-finals after the taking of penalties.

The Maroons started with a Matthew Cocks shot that came off the bar but it was St George's who took the lead on the half-hour mark when Heatchliffe Schembri hit home after some fine Darmanin work.

Gzira went surging forward in search of a quick equaliser. Attempts by Baldassare Borg and Cocks were neutralised by Pulis but in the 59th minute they deservedly drew level.

Ian Buhagiar's shot was stopped by the St George's woodwork but in came Cedric Sciberras who headed home from the rebound.

In the 65th minute Gzira were reduced to ten players when Andre Buttigieg was sent off following a second yellow card.

Five minutes later Gzira were unlucky when a Lawrence Vella lob on a quick counter-break hit the upright. Ivan Camilleri was then denied by Micallef as the match dragged into extra-time.

The Saints, with a player more on the field, dictated matters and created various chances but Gzira goalkeeper Micallef was alert to deny Keith Darmanin and Johan Spiteri.

Penalties were eventually required to decide the issue between these two teams who are also neck and neck in the chase for promotion to Division One next season.

Cocks, Cini, Sciberras and Buhagiar scored for Gzira with Darmanin and Mizzi the only ones to score from the spot for St George's.

Zebbug Rangers 1
Dingli Swallows 0

A first-half goal, scored by Keith Farrugia, was enough for Zebbug Rangers to reach the last four of the KO competition as Dingli Swallows continued with their poor season.

Farrugia almost put his team ahead after 20 minutes but in no time the same player put the Rangers ahead with a powerful drive from an Elton Catania cross.

Luck was not on Dingli's side as they hit the woodwork on two occasions following efforts by Steve Callus and Dino Pace.

At the other end, Zebbug had two other attempts on goal by Clayton Borg which missed the target by a whisker.

Dingli pressed hard to force extra time in the last 15 minutes of the match. However, despite the commitment shown by Aldrin Muscat and Jonathan Sapiano up front, the Rangers preserved their slender lead to reach the next round of the competition.

Referee: Edward Spiteri.

Vittoriosa Stars 0
Sta Venera Lightnings 3

Stephen Said was the main protagonist in this match as Sta Venera deservedly made it to the semi-finals at the expense of a disappointing Vittoriosa side. Sta Venera are the only Division Three side still in contention for the title.

Sta Venera showed the better football during the first period and after eight minutes Joe Chetcuti hit just wide from a good position.

In the 15th minute, Vittoriosa went close through Joe Mizzi but five minutes later Sta Venera took the lead through a cute Said lob.

The Saints scored again soon after but Joe Chetcuti's 'goal' was disallowed for offside.

Lagana tried to lift Vittoriosa's game but Sta Venera dominated the proceedings after the break and in the 55th minute they were awarded a penalty for a foul on Chetcuti. Said made it 2-0 from the spot.

Vittoriosa were stunned and only had a Charles Cachia free-kick to show. Sta Venera made sure of their passage to the semi-finals in the 76th minute when Chetcuti scored after receiving from Andrew Hili.

Qormi 1
Mellieha 2

An injury-time goal, scored by substitute Reuben Vella, saw Mellieha through to the semi-finals.

The northerners took the lead after just three minutes when Matthew Borg headed home after a Chris Gauci shot had bounced off the bar.

Qormi were quick to react but Steve Baldacchino and Anthony Brignone saw their shots going off target as Mellieha continued to assume the initiative.

They went close to double their lead through efforts by Mario Debono and Borg.

After the interval Qormi showed better qualities. Johan Scicluna, Patrick Barbara and Clyde Grech were finding more space now. Twelve minutes from time their efforts were rewarded when Scicluna headed inside the opponents' net.

The match seemed destined to extra-time but deep into stoppage time, Vella scored the goal that mattered when he hammered home after being put through by Debono.

Referee: Esther Farrugia.
