Teenage prodigy Michelle Wie defended her right to compete on the men's tour and said she wanted to play in the Ryder Cup some day as she prepared for this week's European Masters.

Wie, making her first appearance on the men's European Tour, will play alongside England's Nick Dougherty and Spain's Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano in the opening two rounds on the Crans-sur-Sierre course in Switzerland. In nine previous appearances on the men's tour, Wie had missed the cut in eight events before finally making her breakthrough at the SK Telecom Open in Korea in May.

"Hopefully, I will be able to play the Ryder Cup one day, that would be awesome and I think it is totally possible," she said.

Softball - US win sixth world title

The US won their sixth successive women's World Championship with a 3-0 victory over Japan on Tuesday, bringing to an end the first test event for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

The 2008 Games will be the last for softball for at least eight years after the IOC last year voted to exclude the sport from the 2012 Olympics.

The International Softball Federation (ISF) aims to pitch for a return at the 2016 Games although continued domination by the US, who have won all three Olympic golds to date, is unlikely to help their cause.

Cricket - Trescothick needs more rest

England batsman Marcus Trescothick has pulled out of next month's Champions Trophy because of a medical condition, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) said yesterday.

Trescothick returned home just two weeks into England's February-April tour of India citing personal reasons, but later said that a virus was to blame, along with wanting to spend more time with his family.

Trescothick, who is expected to be fit for the Ashes tour of Australia which begins in November, has been receiving treatment since his return from India but needs more rest.

Rallying - Citroen confirm 2007 return

Citroen confirmed their 2007 return to the world rally championship as a manufacturer with a driver line-up of champion Sebastien Loeb and Spaniard Dani Sordo.

Citroen decided to take a year out in 2006 after winning the drivers' and manufacturers' titles.

Loeb, now close to clinching his third crown in a row after Sunday's Japanese Rally handed him a record 27th career win, has been competing this year in a Citroen Xsara run by the Belgium-based Kronos team.

Sordo, the 2005 junior world champion, has also been competing for Kronos. He is third overall in the championship after being disqualified in Japan at the weekend.
