¤ Former world number one Martina Hingis swept to the second title of her comeback year, subduing Russian teenager Olga Poutchkova 6-0 6-4 in the final of the Kolkata Open yesterday. The Swiss top seed overawed her 18-year-old rival, who was playing her maiden WTA final, in the first set but then had to rally from 3-1 down as Poutchkova fought back with some superb shots. Hingis, who also won this year's Italian Open, clinched victory in her fourth final of the year in under an hour, claiming her 42nd career title.

¤ Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova won her second title in two weeks with a 6-4 6-0 victory over France's world number one Amelie Mauresmo in a rain-disrupted China Open final yesterday. The world number five, who also triumphed in Bali the previous week, claimed her eighth career title when top seed Mauresmo's game fell apart after a two-hour break for wet weather.

¤ China's Lin Dan fought his way back from a game down to beat fellow countryman Bao Chunlai 18-21 21-17 21-12 and take his first singles crown at the badminton world championships yesterday. In the women's singles, Xie Xingfang defended her crown when she beat world number two Zhang Ning to win an all-Chinese final 21-16 21-14.
