It is understood that there is only one professional retinal screener in Malta, at Mater Dei Hospital. I wonder if this is sufficient for a population of 412,000.

The incidence of diabetes in Malta is very high, so surely this one screener is not enough.

It must also be awkward for this one screener to be absent, be it for leave or for health reasons. This is not fair on diabetic patients or the retinal screener concerned, and steps should be taken to rectify this matter and not count the cost of equipment or study for other screeners.
