Once upon a time, long ago, in a very small cottage near the forest, lived an old lady with a small dog. Nobody knows her or who she is, but a nearby town fellow told us that she was a very wicked witch. She had done very nasty things to everybody who crossed the forest to go to some other village.

One day I was walking briskly through the forest with my elder brother. It was getting dark and we began to get frightened. We had a feeling that we were being followed and we stopped several times to look behind us but no one was there. In the forest it was getting cold and at one time we saw a figure of an old lady with a stick, but it was like a shadow.

We started to run but the howling noise of a huge fierce wolf stopped us and when we turned round, there stood an ugly old woman with a big nose. She had grey hair and very long nails on her fingers. She had a very creepy grin on her face and she started to laugh. Her voice was like a frightened rat.

We jumped and shouted with fright but we could not move. We were very shocked and we fell on our knees. Behind us we felt the snort of an animal and felt his breath on our necks. We couldn't move but the silence ended with the old witch's voice. "You better come with me or I'll have my animals on you."

Our knees knocked under us but we managed to stand up and we realised that we were surrounded by horrid things. There was a huge wolf, with eyes like fire, and we had no choice. We had to obey and follow that ugly witch to where she was taking us.

We arrived an hour later. It was a small cottage under a very large tree. She opened the big, black door with a squeaky noise and entered. It was dark and cold inside and by the moonlight I could see many creepy crawlers on the floor. When you walked you could hear the crushing noise under your feet. We kept our hands in front of us to feel where we were going. At one time I felt something spiky and prickly on a table. The witch lit a candle and by the light I could see a strange thing on the table with very big teeth. I shouted loudly and felt somebody pulling me from that nasty thing.

In that instant the horrid thing tried to bite my hands with a dreadful roar. After the fright we looked around and all we saw were shivery and ghostly moving creatures, like skeletons and beheaded knights. They were hitting a small deer, frightened like us. We could take no more of this fearful scene and we looked at each other and then we looked at the witch. She was bent over a very large cauldron. My brother decided to run for our lives. He took hold of my hand and ran to the witch and pushed her into the boiling water. She screamed and splashed but we did not stay to look.

We arrived at the nearest village and told the villagers what happened. They grabbed whatever came to hand and with great anger they ran to capture that cruel witch and make the woods safe again. When we saw the tree where the cottage was, all we found were thorns, weeds, slugs and a damp place, you could never imagine. She was gone, with all her pets. I wonder how. Maybe we will never know.
