There is a common tendency in Malta to have restoration projects for major buildings but other buildings or elements that are considered "minor" but which in reality could be extremely important are ignored.

In Gozo we still have a substantial amount of property and road markings from the British period which end up disappearing or forgotten. These are important not only as they refer to a particular period in our history but also because they are another example of Maltese workmanship since they were done by Maltese sculptors in Maltese stone.

A number of markers from the Victorian period lie on the main road to Gozo. They will all be lost unless taken care of. Two of them will soon be toppled over unless their base is seen to. Another is seriously deteriorated. A fourth has lost its original context.

It does not take much to see to these important items. Certainly they do deserve to be conserved not least because they are on the main road. The four of them should remain where they are and not taken to a museum as they refer to the property and area in which they are located. Their conservation should not cost much and is urgently needed.

If we are really serious about Eco-Gozo this is the type of intervention necessary to protect our heritage.
