The number of fatalities on the work place decreased from an average of nine to about four deaths per year over the past 10 years, Health Minister Joe Cassar said.

In 2002 the number of accidents at work stood at 3,500 for every 100,000 workers. This decreased to 1,700 in 2012.

Dr Cassar was speaking during a visit to the Pietà offices of the Occupational Health and Safety Authority this afternoon.

He told employees who gathered around him that he was proud of them and their invaluable work.

Mark Gauci, the chief executive officer of the OHSA, that that while accidents could be controlled, they could not be completely eliminated since they remained the result of human activity.
