The government has denied reports in a section of the media that Frank Sammut, the person at the centre of allegations over commissions for oil purchases, was investigated by the Commission Against Corruption in 2003.

The government said that it had been established after research that in 1993 an allegation against Mr Sammut was made anonymously . This was investgated by the commission presided by Judge  Victor Borg Costanzi (and not Victor Caruana Colombo as reported). The investigation found no evidence to back the allegations.

The report was presented to parliament by Justice Minister Joe Fenech on January 18, 1994.

In 1999 two claims were made in connection with a tender by MOBC. They were investigated by the commission presided by Judge Albert Manche. It was concluded that both were unfounded. The conclusions were tabled in parliament by Austin Gatt, then Minister of Justice, on July 27, 1999.
