What will enlargement of the EU mean for women? This was the starting point for a public hearing organised by the European Parliament's Women's Rights Committee on September 10 on the situation of women in the countries applying to join the European Union.
Amended directive on equal treatment
The Directive 2002/73/EC of September 23 amending Council Directive 76/207/EEC on the implementation of the principle of equal treatment for men and women as regards access to employment, vocational training and promotion, and working conditions has just been published in the Official Journal. It can be found in all EU languages under: http://europa.eu.int/eur-lex/en/oj/2002/l26920021005en.html.
Public hearing: fighting breast cancer
The need to reduce the mortality rate of women with breast cancer, improve their quality of life and inform women about the risks of, and the available treatment for, breast cancer were the main concerns that led the European Parliament's Women's Rights Committee to hold a public hearing on this subject on October 1.
MEPs discussed different aspects of the disease with doctors, nurses and academics, all with the aim to one day bring about a 'Europe without breast cancer'.
