New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said on Friday she was pregnant with her first child, and planned to take a short break after the birth in June.

She plans to take a six-week break, during which time Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters will step in.

Her pregnancy is one the very few examples of an elected leader holding office while pregnant.

Pakistan's Benazir Bhutto gave birth while in office in 1990, in what was said to be a world first.

Ardern was only sworn into office in October after a closely-fought election.

She's New Zealand's youngest prime minister in more than half a century and has become hugely popular in her rise to power.

Ardern says she learnt that she was expecting just days before she took office.

Local media report she struggled with morning sickness while forming her government.

She's also dealt with unwelcome questions over balancing work and family life.

"Look, it's - I hear lots of stories about women who face that dilemma at various stages, regardless of when they go back. I have to acknowledge, though, that my job is different," she said.
