Over 4,000 participants are taking part in various morning and evening sports activities at the different sport centres as the 2015 Summer on the Move programme, organised by Kunsill Malti għall-Isport (KMS), got underway earlier this week.

This year more venues were added to the programme as sessions will also be offered at the Basketball Sport Complex in Ta’ Qali, Selmun Activity Park in Mellieħa and also the Marsa Sports Complex.

The programme also includes sailing sessions at Birżebbuġa Sailing Club and motorsport events at Badger Karting in Ta’ Qali.

Apart from the extension of its venues, KMS has also launched new sport such as archery with over 60 participants, golf, cricket, rhythmic gymnastics, futsal, hockey, waterpolo and non-contact boxing.

These activities are being offered in conjunction with the various sport associations.

“This partnership will give children the opportunity to continue the sport that they most prefer with the various associations providing a window of opportunity for continuation and development,” KMS said.

Meanwhile, the increase in sports disciplines is being supported by the level of coaches working within the KMS fold.

Swimming remains the all-time favourite during the summer programme.

For this reason lessons are also being held at Kirkop Complex and at the Siġġiewi Centre. The KMS organisers also decided to lower entry age for those taking up swimming. Sessions can now be attended by children as young as two years when accompanied by their parents.

Dancing is also one of the disciplines which year after year attracts great interest.

This year it will be even more challenging for both instructors and participants as during the eight-week programme, they will prepare an extensive show that will feature during the European Week of Sport.

The programme offers lessons in various styles including ballet, hip-hop, jazz and lyrical dancing.

Summer on the Move activities end on September 12. One may obtain more details on registration through website www.sportmalta.org.mt or by phoning 22036281.
