Transport Malta is to issue a call for tenders for a new drainage system to channel water away from the foundations of the road between Mtarfa and Mdina.

Transport Minister Austin Gatt said in reply to a parliamentary question that because of the geology of the site, a considerable amount of water was seeping under the road. As a result, the clay under the road was getting wet and being deformed, causing cracks on the road’s surface.

Experts had proposed the building of a 'French drain' so that the water could be channelled to the storm water culvert on the outside part of the road. A call for tenders will be issued in the coming weeks.

Transport Malta is also evaluating sealing materials to be used to repair the cracks.
