Israel's President Shimon Peres today formally asked hawkish Likud party leader Benjamin Netanyahu to form a new government following February 20 elections.

Peres handed him a letter officially asking the former prime minister to form a new government, and Netanyhu accepted, also in writing, at a ceremony at the president's official residence in Jerusalem.
