A 17th century Neapolitan crib on display at the Social Policy Ministry, Palazzo Ferreria, Republic Street, Valletta features a collection of biblical and traditional scenes, all collated together to make one spectacular display.

In prime position is a nativity scene entitled Il Mistero. Jesus, the Virgin Mary, Joseph, angels and the three kings are placed in the ruins of a Roman temple, intended to symbolise the fall of paganism and the birth of Christianity.

The Italian city of Naples has been renowned for centuries for crib-making in the Campania region style. It is a craft that has been passed down through the generations, reaching its peak in the 18th century when the whole society was involved in the construction of large and elaborate cribs.
