A residents' parking scheme in Naxxar that has been tested on a trial period for the past months has increased rather than mitigated the parking problem and will not be made permanent, the government said.

It said in a statement that a request for the implementation of the scheme was made by the council in September and was put to the test on April 24.

The Transport Ministry said that during this period, several complaints were received by Transport Malta from individuals and entities.

The council has been informed in writing that the trial period was now over and in view of the complaints received, TM was not in a position to approve the scheme on a permanent basis.

The council has been requested to remove the notices related to the scheme.

The ministry said it was willing to continue discussions for alternative traffic management arrangements to be found.
