The Egyptian Military Council this evening confirmed that it had taken over the governance of Egypt after the resignation of Hosni Mubarak but insisted that it would hand power back to civilian government after elections.

In a televised statement, a spokesman for the council paid tribute to Mubarak and thanked him for his service to the country. He also paid tribute to the 'martyrs' who died in the recent protests.

The council said it intended to hold dialogue on the transition.

The statement was made as hundreds of thousands of Egyptians continued to celebrate throughout Egypt. Mubarak went to the Red Sea resort of Sharm in the afternoon and reportedly declared he has no plans to leave Egypt.

Meanwhile, according to some wire reports, the military is suspending Parliament and sacking the Cabinet.
