I refer to Damian Cassar’s letter entitled Politicians’ Salaries (January 11) in which he says he heard Owen Bonnici say, at a public discussion session on December 28, 2009, that he was very much in favour of increasing ministerial salaries.

I have been an active member in KNŻ for the last couple of years, serving also as its president in 2009/2010. I had, of course, also attended the educational talk of December 28, 2009 and I am sure that at no point was the issue of the €600 per week increase in ministers’ salaries discussed.

I am sure that I would have remembered that since it actually shocked me when I heard about it a few weeks ago!

The session of December 28 was purely an educational one where members of Parliament related to youths attending the seminar how Parliament works and explained the functions of important constitutional figures such as the Speaker, the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition.

It is also interesting to note that Mr Cassar’s version of events differed when comparing what he said to Bondìplus (where he mentioned “politicians’ wage increases”, thus including the increase in MPs’ honorarium) and that mentioned in the letter carried in The Times (where he mentioned only ministers’ salaries).
