The Justice Minister said this evening he was willing to personally investigate each and every case of persons allegedly holding more than one Identity Card.

Speaking in Parliament, the minister invited Nationalist Party deputy leader Beppe Fenech Adami to go to his office with the list of persons he was alleging had more than one ID card and he would investigate all cases.

Dr Fenech Adami retorted that he knew of two cases of people with more than one ID card.

The minister, Owen Bonnici, said that foreigners were not allowed to vote in a general election. This was disputed by the Nationalist MP who said that the last electoral register contained the names of people twice and if an election was held tomorrow they would vote more than once.

The minister said it was news to him that foreigners could vote in a general election. The only exception was Maltese with dual citizenship, he said.

Referring to two cases mentioned by The Malta Independent, Dr Bonnici said that one was a foreigner who was not given an ID card but a residence document, coloured pink as opposed to the blue/green ID card.

The other case was flagged down by the system at Identity Malta. The person had a provisional ID Card, which had been introduced by the previous administration for those who were not in a position to provide a birth certificate.

There were some 285 people who had such a card. The person mentioned by The Independent was later given a normal ID Card as she had married. But Identity Malta’s internal system had flagged the case and in turn, Identity Malta informed the Electoral Commission.

Dr Bonnici said that Identity Malta had its internal system as did the Electoral Commission and the political parties. During the last legislature the PL deleted 101 people who died from the Electoral Register.
