A Guinean migrant who lives in an open centre in Trapani, Sicily, has been jailed for seven months after admitting to having travelled to Malta for a holiday with false documentation.

Zaac Bensoli, 21, admitted that he came to Malta on holiday with fake documents. He told the police he did not come to Malta to look for a job - as many do - but had come to Malta on holiday. He said he was a student.

Magistrate Doreen Clarke heard how Mr Bensoli arrived in Malta a month ago and had entered with the fake documents. However, as he was checking in to leave Malta to return to Trapani, check-in officials realised that his documents were counterfeit and he was arrested immediately.

Magistrate Clarke jailed him for seven months. His legal aid lawyer, Joe Ellis, gave notice of appeal.

Police Inspector Darren Buhagiar prosecuted.
