Coventry City's Michael Mifsud is in contention to make the shortlist for the Football League's Goal of the Year award.

The Maltese striker's superb goal, at Sheffield Wednesday last April, was voted as City's best in 2007. Claiming 71% of the total votes, Mifsud was an overwhelming winner, beating off competition from Dele Adebola, Michael Doyle and Stephen Hughes.

Last week, the Football League said there will once again be a Goal of the Year category at the 2008 Football League Awards at the London Hilton on March 2 and asked all clubs to nominate one goal from any Football League competition in the 2007 calendar year.

Coventry may be languishing at the wrong end of the standings but Mifsud is experiencing a fine patch as earlier this week he polled the most votes in the FA Cup 'Player of the Round' award after his brace in the third round victory away to Blackburn.

The FA.com voters chose Mifsud as their 'Player of the Round' and regardless of how Coventry fare in the rest of the competition, Mifsud will now be guaranteed a place at the FA Cup final on May 17.
