Former triathlete Maria Mifsud Bonnici, a Master of Sport and Exercise Physiology, was awarded a diploma in sports nutrition by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) at a ceremony at the IOC headquarters in Lausanne last week.

The diploma was presented to Mifsud Bonnici by the chairman of the IOC medical commission. This globally-recognised programme, established by the medical commission of the IOC, is run by renowned leaders in the field of sports nutrition, namely Ron Maughan, Louise Burke and Susan Shirreffs.

Although Mifsud Bonnici has retired from competition, she has remained active in local sports. Her target is to unlock success in sport through the field of science.

To this end, Mifsud Bonnici has been involved in swimming for the past three years, assisting national coach Andy Colbourn with physiological tests as well as giving nutritional guidance to the swimmers to help them realise their potential and achieve higher standards.

Mifsud Bonnici, who heads the Health and Sport Science Commission within the Kunsill Malti għall-iSport, is one of only 88 sport nutritionists in the world to have obtained the IOC diploma to date and the only Maltese to have done so.
