The Malta Triathlon Association will be organising a middle distance race tomorrow at Xemxija, starting at 6 a.m.

Each of the three segments - the 2.5km swim, 80km cycle and 20km run - would be considered by most athletes as a sufficient test of endurance, let alone all three combined in one race.

Triathletes have been preparing intensively during the past months, taking part in various athletics and cycling competitions to ensure they go into this weekend's arduous race in top shape.

David Galea, who recently set a new national triathlon record in Cyprus, is one of the favourites. Recently, he confirmed his fine form by winning a Malta Cycling Federation time-trial at Ta' Qali.

Mark Zammit in World Championships

Meanwhile, 19-year-old Mark Zammit will be representing Malta in Sunday's Triathlon World Championships in Madeira.

Zammit, second junior in the Triathlon Championships for Small States of Europe in Cyprus last month, will be taking part in the Sprint Distance.

This consists of a 750m swim, 20km cycle and a 5km run.
