Planning guidelines on micro wind turbines were approved at a meeting of the Mepa board this morning.

Micro wind turbines can generate up to a maximum of 20kw of energy. There are roof and tower mounted turbines which can be installed both at the top of houses and industrial premises.

The guidelines allow the installation of both types of turbines in industrial areas up to a maximum height of 20 metres.

In so far as installation on residences, this will only be allowed for research purposes and cannot exceed five metres above roof level.

People who have already installed wind turbines on top of their homes may be allowed to retain them for research purposes, Mepa officials said.

The guidelines do not establish sound limitations because of a lack of research data. The authority is currently in the process of compiling such data.

The guidelines will be reviewed once more data is available.

Wind turbines may be installed on existing large buildings in outside development zones but may not be installed in scheduled buildings such as historical buildings.

The policy guidelines need the endorsement of the Office of the Prime Minister.
