Some time ago Junior News featured a mascot competition organised by the office of the Commissioner for Children

This mascot would have the very important job of teaching children in Malta and Gozo about their rights and about everything which children in Malta and Gozo should have, or should be able to do.

Since the mascot for the competition was intended for children, it was only fitting that the winner of the competition was chosen by children. Four young members from the Council for Children each gave their vote for the design that they thought should be used as the children's mascot.

The Commissioner for Children and the staff of the office also voted for their favourite, choice of a mascot which would be attractive and appealing to all Maltese and Gozitan children.

Choosing a winner was not easy, because the Commissioner for Children received so many wonderful drawings from you!

In the end, the clear favourite for a mascot was Ġuginu l-Iljunċinu, who was drawn by Amy Mizzi, from Carlo Diacono Girls Junior Lyceum, in Żejtun.

Amy said that she drew a lion because lions are brave and a lion would not be afraid to fight for children's rights. When asked about how she felt to have won such an important competition, she said: "I am very happy that my design was chosen to represent the office of the commissioner's activities. I am glad that more awareness and protection can be carried out with children."

Amy won a book prize sponsored by Agenda Bookshops, as well as an Mp3 player sponsored by A to Z electronics.
